Having successfully made salt dough to play with in our bakery; today we moved on to the real thing – home made bread! We mixed flour, yeast, salt and water and left it to rise. It soon became about four times its original size and was ready to roll into bread rolls. Whilst baking in the oven, the delicious aroma attracted teachers from all over the school to see what we were up to! The rolls were truly delicious and there are more pictures to enjoy on the children’s individual portfolios.

This week we have had lots of fun learning all about The Great Fire of London. We have turned our role play into the Pudding Lane Bakery – the origin of the fire; we have made salt dough bread, pies and cakes that we can sell from the bakery. Also, we converted a picture of a three story house into a timber framed building in the ‘Tudor’ style. We have painted people escaping by boat on the River Thames and we painted King Charles II who tried to halt the progress of the fire by blowing up buildings with gunpowder! For our weekend news, we wrote in the style of the diarist Samuel Pepys, complete with old style ‘curly’ writing and then we produced portraits of the diarist in wax. Finally we had a quiz about the fire, to see how much we had learned! Tomorrow we are making REAL bread, too….

Our club meets on a Tuesday lunch time to enjoy creating puppet plays using the Puppet Pals App. With the Director’s Pass Version, we can take photos of ourselves, our school scenery and even playdoh animals and objects which can then be added to our play. We are able to add movement and dialogue simultaneously to create a very professional finish! It’s loads of fun!!

Continuing our Fire Topic, we are this week answering the children’s questions about volcanoes.
To get the work off to an amazing start, we made our own erupting volcano with a set of simple ingredients found in every kitchen, such as vinegar, baking powder, washing up liquid and of course red food colouring for the fiery lava. A spectacular chemical reaction took place which caused our volcano to continuously erupt for ninety minutes!!!
